Wise Words
When you are describing,

A shape, or sound, or tint;

Don't state the matter plainly,

But put it in a hint;

And learn to look at all things,

With a sort of mental squint.

~Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll)

That's right. This is a rant about how I hate archetypes and predictability! Predictability kills a story and archetypes are nothing but predictable!!!! So please, by all means try and convince me otherwise. I'm waiting.

While some books do get boring and dreary by utilizing old archetypes everyone knows, it is still possible to keep things fresh and alive by being unique with them. I realize that sounds rather ironic, but consider this: almost every book we read nowadays is actually creating a new archetype, or rather manipulating an old one to make it appear different. Take Voldemort, for example: while he is what we would call the classic villain, Rowling made the classic villain archetype darker; most villains in books now attempt to model their villains to be more evil, to be darker and more complex than just your simple "I will destroy the world" villain. As time goes on and more novels are published, archetypes themselves evolve into more complex organisms.

Wow, that is useful, I think it also rates a person's overall posts.

It is =D

P.S. Try not to go off topic. If you need to, create a new topic. That way, people can find what they're looking for easier Smile

If you didn't notice, I'm not the one who went off topic, Kris. =D Anyway, back to archetypes... I hate them!

I was answering aurora's question... I didn't mean for someone to respond. Next time, I'll create a new thread to avoid further confusion.

Umm... you said that already. And sometimes predictability can lead to more suspense or aid a story. Like the golden-haired hero versus the darker "bad boy." We hate archetypes, so we're drawn to the bad boy.

Hehe, that's why in my story the golden-haired so-called hero is really the evil mastermind, and the dark misunderstood character is more of a hero. (of course he's more of a heroine's sidekick.)

I'm sorry for not replying sooner. I don't know why, but I never noticed this although new posts should show as read. I think it's because of my bad habit of never signing out...

This sounds like a really cool plot. I would love to read something like this =)
