Wise Words
When you are describing,

A shape, or sound, or tint;

Don't state the matter plainly,

But put it in a hint;

And learn to look at all things,

With a sort of mental squint.

~Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll)

PostSubject: Poem?   Sun Jun 27, 2010 9:03 pm

So I really suck at Poetry, but I thought I'd give posting it a shot. Embarassed

Going Back Home

Pass the rusted gate, I make my way
A flower in my grasp
For my dear mother, a woman of great sorrows
This place was once my home
Where I spent many a days idling away
Playing with the neighbor kids
Their house long since vacant
Grass once so green gives a lifeless crunch
As I remember the day it all started
A smiling sun kissed my face with it’s warm rays
As my brother and I sat with some friends on a hill
A hill that is now a sorrowful ditch
The final resting place for the masses
And their childhood
Merry little kids as were, singing an old folk song
When suddenly a bitter black cloud engulfed our friendly sun
Shoots rang out in the distance
Shrill voices screamed the disastrous news
The enemy was here

We ran fast as lightening to our homes
I grabbed my things
My brother took hold of our grandfather’s musket
I packed to flee
He ran to fight
I heard a plea
He brushed right by mother

Frozen with fear and shell shocked
I watched them run him through with a bayonet
Two feet from our door

My feet now stand where he fell
I can see his blood on my shoes
I hold back a tear as I force myself on
It’s not long until I see mother again

Dropping to my knees
I place the flowers by the headstone
“Dear mother!” I cry
“Forgive me for I was too cowardly to stop him
The real hero
While I, the deserter survived this great war!”
